Why use a stainless steel collar in your compost toilets ?

Just over ten years ago, when we built our first compost toilets, the need for something that would seal the space between the seat and the bucket became apparent, in order to avoid any leakage between the two. At the time, we salvaged a piece of swimming pool liner that we stapled onto the flat surface underneath the seat.

We found this quite useful and practical, but over time, the liner began to turn yellow and the staples rusted, giving the installation a somewhat off-putting allure. Undaunted, we rose to the challenge.

When we decided to go professional, it was clear to us that we had no wish to offer products that had such a short life span. Our aim was to popularize compost toilets, and we knew that the practical and esthetic aspect of these little boxes were of great important if we were to convince the most recalcitrant.

We designed a collar that needed no fitting points, which would have left the installation prone to rust, in a material that met our particular needs.

Stainless steel is rust resistant, does not deteriorate, is easy to clean, and does not absorb odors.

With use, we found that adding a collar had an additional advantage.

It optimizes the useful capacity of the recipient. If you opt for a bucket whose upper rim touches the seat, you may be able to prevent leakage between the seat and the bucket, but you will never completely fill the bucket. You will always leave at least 10 cm space to avoid having your bottom in the sawdust. Consequently, your container will only ever be filled to 2/3 or 3/4 of its capacity.

Given the cost of containers (especially stainless steel ones), acquiring a collar turns out to be a lot cheaper than buying a 20 liter stainless steel bucket only to use, at most, 15.

Our 10 cm collar also means that there is no need to raise the bucket up 32cm (in the case of the mostly commonly used), to achieve a comfortable seat height at around 45cm (Standard WC seats are at approximately 40cm)

For all these reasons, with a view to quality, Lecopot systematically installs a stainless steel collar on all their models, but also offers them for separate sale to all self-building compost toilet users, to help them build good quality loos, and equally to those who already have composts loos that they wish to upgrade, and remedy the problems mentioned above.
